“Most people are willing to help, but they just don't know where to start. If you invite them to help you make the community a better place, most people are happy to lend a hand.”

In its first year serving both boys and girls, the Malden Catholic Lancers also started its first Students in Action team made up of freshman ladies. With the goal to meet the needs of those with varying physical and mental abilities, the team worked on two main projects: a permanent fix and a celebration of abilities. The team successfully advocated for the City of Malden’s Public Works Department to install a sidewalk ramp for people with wheelchairs or walkers.

By collaborating with another SIA team at the Fenn School, they planned a celebratory event for children of all abilities which included kickball, face painting, food, and more. Throughout their first year as an SIA team, they earned that some aspects of service were surprisingly simple, while others tested their patience and persistence. However, the team relied on their school motto of “Plus Ultra”, which means “More Beyond” to persevere.
